Why Afternoon Tea is Making a Comeback

I have come to believe that afternoon tea is one of those experiences people do not forget.
Sometimes a guest will tell us about a tea room they visited years ago while traveling. Others remember afternoon tea from a trip to England, a hotel tea service, a special occasion with family, or a tradition they once enjoyed but have not been able to find nearby. There is often a kind of delight in their voice when they realize they do not have to travel far to experience it again.
That has been one of the most meaningful things to witness at Panache.
For some guests, afternoon tea feels familiar. For others, it is completely new. But in both cases, I think part of its appeal is that it feels different from the way we usually dine. It is slower. More intentional. More detailed. It gives the table a sense of occasion without requiring a formal celebration.
In my opinion, that is one of the reasons afternoon tea is making a comeback.
It is not only because it is pretty, traditional, or nostalgic, although all of those things are certainly part of its charm. I believe people are drawn to afternoon tea because it offers something many of us are missing: an experience that encourages us to pause, pay attention, and enjoy being together.
There is a reason people are drawn to tiered trays, fine china, loose-leaf tea, scones, and carefully prepared savories, and petite desserts. These details remind us that an experience does not have to be extravagant to feel special. It has to be done with care.
For many guests, afternoon tea feels like a return to something gentler. It is a chance to celebrate a birthday without feeling rushed, gather with friends without shouting over a loud dining room, or spend meaningful time with loved ones. It is also a lovely way to mark life’s quieter moments, the kind that may not require a large event, but still deserve to be remembered.
I see that desire show up often at Panache.
We are craving places that feel warm. Experiences that feel personal. Food that feels thoughtfully prepared. Hospitality that makes us feel seen, not processed.
Afternoon tea offers all of that in a beautiful way.
At Panache, I want the experience to feel refined, but never intimidating. Elegant, but still welcoming. My goal is not to recreate a tradition exactly as it once was. My goal is to make it feel meaningful for today.
Each tea service is an opportunity to bring together flavor, presentation, conversation, and care.
The savories should be more than small sandwiches. The scones should feel like comfort. The desserts should feel like a small indulgence. And the tea itself anchors the experience, inviting guests to sip slowly and enjoy the moment in front of them.
That is the magic of afternoon tea. It encourages people to linger.
In many ways, afternoon tea is the opposite of how we often eat now. It is not built around speed, convenience, or distraction. It is built around presence. It asks us to sit down, pour the tea, pass the tray, notice the details, and enjoy the company.
Perhaps that is why it feels so refreshing.
From where I stand, afternoon tea is making a comeback because people are looking for more than a meal. They are looking for connection. They are looking for beauty in the middle of everyday life. They are looking for places where memories can be made around a table.
And for those who have loved afternoon tea elsewhere, there is something especially lovely about discovering that this kind of experience exists closer to home.
At Panache, that is the experience I hope to create, one thoughtful detail at a time.
