One of our favorite conversations with first-time guests begins with a simple question.

"Where are you visiting from?"

The answers continue to surprise us.

Some guests have driven from just down the road. Others have traveled from Des Moines, Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Minneapolis, Omaha, and beyond. More than once, we've welcomed guests who planned an entire day trip, or even a weekend getaway, around an afternoon at Panache.

Hearing those stories is something we never take for granted.

Looking back over the past year, we've found ourselves reflecting on how this little tea room has continued to grow. While many people first discovered Panache Tea Boutique through Midwest Living, we know our story began much closer to home.

Long before visitors were making road trips to Waterloo, our neighbors throughout the Cedar Valley were celebrating birthdays and anniversaries around our tables, introducing friends to afternoon tea, sharing photos on social media, recommending us to family and coworkers, and taking the time to leave thoughtful reviews.

At the time, those probably felt like small gestures. Looking back, we can see they were helping build something much bigger than any of us realized.

Late last year, Midwest Living included Panache in a feature highlighting memorable afternoon tea destinations across the Midwest. We were deeply honored by the recognition, and it introduced many new guests to our little tearoom in downtown Waterloo.

Even now, months later, we regularly welcome visitors who tell us they first discovered Panache because of that article.

We're incredibly grateful for the opportunity, but we also know recognition like that doesn't happen in isolation.

It grows from the support of a community.

Every recommendation shared with a friend, every thoughtful review, every photo posted after a special afternoon, and every guest who chose to celebrate with us helped tell our story long before a magazine ever did.

We've also been fortunate to have organizations like Main Street Waterloo and Experience Waterloo champion not only Panache, but our downtown community as a whole. Their work encourages visitors to discover everything our district has to offer and reminds people that memorable experiences aren't reserved for larger cities. Sometimes they're waiting in communities like ours.

One of the unexpected joys of the past year has been watching first-time visitors discover more than just our tearoom. Many arrive early to explore downtown, browse neighboring shops, or linger after tea to enjoy the district a little longer.

If an afternoon at Panache encourages someone to spend the day supporting other local businesses, we consider that something worth celebrating.

The conversations we remember most, though, rarely revolve around the menu.

Instead, guests tell us how they felt while they were here.

Over the past year, we've heard from people who drove across Iowa because they were searching for an afternoon tea experience they couldn't find closer to home. Others have shared that visiting Panache brought back fond memories of afternoon teas they enjoyed while traveling. Many have described their visit as peaceful, comforting, beautifully curated, or simply a chance to slow down and reconnect with the people they came with.

Some tell us they're already planning their next visit before they leave. Others return with friends and family because they want to share the experience with people they care about.

Those conversations have reminded us that hospitality is about so much more than preparing beautiful food or serving exceptional tea.

It's about creating a place where people can celebrate life's milestones, reconnect across generations, catch up with an old friend, or simply enjoy an unhurried afternoon together.

We spend countless hours thinking about every detail, from the recipes we develop in our kitchen and the teas we carefully select to the tables we prepare before each reservation. Those details matter because they help create an experience that feels thoughtful from beginning to end.

But over the years, our guests have taught us that what people carry home isn't just the memory of a favorite tea or dessert.

They remember how they were welcomed.

They remember the conversations they shared.

They remember how they felt around the table.

If that's what stays with them long after the last cup has been poured, then we've accomplished exactly what we set out to do.

Every time we ask a first-time guest where they've traveled from, we're reminded that their journey to Panache didn't begin when they turned onto Jefferson Street.

It began much earlier.

It began with someone who chose to share their experience.

A friend who made the recommendation.

A family member who planned a day together.

A thoughtful online review.

A photo that caught someone's attention.

A community that believed in a small tea room and wanted others to discover it too.

That's how Panache has grown.

Not because of one article, one review, or one moment, but because of thousands of small acts of kindness that continue to ripple outward.

To every guest, neighbor, community partner, and visitor who has been part of that story, thank you.

Whether you've joined us once or many times, celebrated life's milestones around our tables, shared your experience with someone else, or simply cheered us on from afar, you've helped shape what Panache has become.

We couldn't have done it without you.

And as we welcome each new guest through our doors, we're reminded that this story is still being written.

We look forward to sharing a cup of tea with you soon.
